Why is Tantra Special?

Tantra yoga has a special place in is its orientation to personal growth. Tantra is one of the oldest forms of body oriented psychology and one of the only paths that recognizes the value of pleasure in achieving emotional freedom from anxiety and in healing emotional injuries.

As a school, Tantra has a history of over five thousand years (coherent Western psychological somatic theory starts with Freud, 1856-1939) of bringing together the intelligence of the mind and the wisdom of the body.

Tantra integrates the physical, mental, and emotional dimensions of life. It claims that how you think about your life influences how your body functions. Your physical state of being influences the thoughts you have. Both mind and body influence your emotional state.

Tantra includes spirituality (not religion), (the search to “know who you are,” to understand the “meaning of life,” and ways of reducing suffering, and having a sense of “inner peace” and happiness) as an inherent part of personal growth.

The word “spirit” comes from the Latin spiritus, a word related to the verb spirare which means “to breathe.” When we use the words spiritual, we are really referring to the very essence of what it means to be alive. Tantra recognizes that our breath is the unifying link between our mind, body, and emotions. Breath also what connects us to one another and enhances our ability to feel.

In the west, Tantra emphasizes sexuality as a means of personal growth. Our orientation can either use sexuality, or focus on the mind-body tools of Tantra as a path towards growth.

Sexuality is a most powerful, creative force. When awakened, it can directly catalyze the awakening of every aspect of our essential Self. In our culture sexuality is not understood, and often is approached neurotically. Therefore, learning how to use the power and pleasure of sexual eros to fuel awakening of the sacred is particularly important and transformative.
